These are some of the websites that I've used to get news and/or send emails about various political issues. Most of the groups that have an action alert listserv also have a way to send their pre-written (edited by you if you want) letters to the appropriate politicians. *Insert standard disclaimer here*

Working Assets' Act for Change keeps track of current issues you can take action on. They also have an action alert listserv, I believe. Many issues are covered and sorted for your convenience: U.S. politics, rights & society, global affairs, environment, work & economy, health & science, media & culture, and family & education.

American Civil Liberties Union keeps track of issues related to civil rights. They have an action alert listserv.

Center for a New American Dream helps people "consume responsibly to protect the environment, enhance quality of life and promote social justice." They have a section on how to reduce junk mail and an action alert listserv among other things.

Natural Resources Defense Council keeps track of environmental issues (all over the world I think) and has an action alert listserv.

Nowar Collective has a listserv and keeps track of war related activities and ways to protest them.

Planned Parenthood has a action alert listserv for women's rights issues.

Public Citizen not only has information on many issues and action alerts, they also keep track of how your senators and representatives voted on key issues.
