Data Feature

Project Overview

Design and implement a 0-1 data management and display feature for customer websites to address an enterprise client’s needs while delivering value to all customers.

Problem

An enterprise client needed to display extensive tabular data on their website in a way that allowed website visitors to search and filter the data.

Project goals

Provide customers a way to manage and display data sets on their website.

  • Manage data sets directly

  • Create or replace data from a csv import

  • Display data sets on any webpage as tables, lists or with custom styling

  • Can be given to all customers

Project Constraints

  • Must support all data sets and display options available on enterprise client’s previous website

  • Feature needed to available before enterprise client’s website launch

Team

CTPO, Senior Product Manager (me), Software Engineering Manager, 4 Software Engineers, plus supporting roles in product, QA, support and client services

Role / contribution

Senior Product Manager for entire product lifecycle, which for this project included:

Competitor research, UX/UI design, user stories, project management and deep collaboration with six person engineering team, user acceptance testing to ensure delivery of high-quality work, continuous iterative improvements, beta testing coordination, and launch support such as help documentation and "wow" demos for sales & marketing.

Process

Discovery & research

Analyzed use cases for enterprise client to determine reasonable limits on number of rows & tables

  • Tested feature with real client data tables unearthed issues

  • Working closely with beta testers and internal departments led to enhancements such as resizing column width and adding an export option

created fancy demos and examples for sales to use

looked at enterprise customer’s current needs and data sets along with competitors offerings to determine best size for data sets. Competitor research also gave us insights for how to best leapfrog while implementing this enterprise-required feature (like column reorder & better customized page block layouts)

working closely with beta testers and internal depts led to enhancements like resizing column widths and adding an export option

set original data set limits but then needed to revise them upwards to accommodate enterprise client needs

0-1 new feature instigated by a promise to enterprise client, but created as a win for all clients. Solution incorporated needs of other customers and increases product value for all. 

  • This complex feature was in beta testing when I was let go. 

  • A lot of collaboration between dev, product, client services, enterprise client, beta testers, support. 

  • created shiny demos for sales team to use and worked with marketing on materials they needed. Created help docs for enterprise client
